My boyfriend and I decided to take a spontaneous road trip down highway 101 on the West Coast of America starting in Portland Oregon and ending in LA California. It was life changing inspiring holiday that consisted of exploring the wonderful modern city of Portland followed by nights sleeping in our little rented Ford Fiesta in the amazing giant red woods, running up the hills of San Francisco (not quite running) and finishing with cocktails at universal studios in LA. I have promised James that I will write a memoir which I will do in the summer when I have more time to dedicate to this blog 24/7. Until then I hope you can enjoy the pictures we took on our 1,400 mile trip of a lifetime.
From gay pride to Japanese gardens and all the voodoo doughnuts in-between, Portland was the city we instantly fell in love with
I never was a coffee drinker until I tried ‘Stumptown’ coffee which is to die for! Infact i’d go back just for a cup. All cafes that serve this beautiful blend promote it with pride
For those of you that haven’t been to Portland or watched an episode of Grimm then you won’t know that the slogan for the city is ‘Keep Portland Weird’ which the people there have mixed feelings about but I see it as promoting individuality, of the unusual and eccentric people that live there and I LOVE IT! There is a deeper meaning behind it I’m sure but as a person who likes to see positive in everything I think of the slogan as way of saying ‘we are modern, everyone is excepted here and we appreciate creative people more than anywhere in the world’. I can not remember who said this but on one radio 4 podcast an individual said ‘ We are not weird, the rest of America is weird’. Im happy to say that I will be seeing you again Portland.
On The Road
We had to do it at least once; stay in a grubby Motel on the side of the road and so we did as after leaving Bend, we were so exhausted from the excitement and the driving so we thought we’d give it a shot. We were greeted by a young man who was extremely high and decided to give us a very generous offer on a room as his mum wasn’t in. The outside looked like something out of a typical horror film, we were expecting tacky red and green decor covered in stains and a cockroach or two. We couldn’t have been more wrong! it was absoulety wonderful, homely and comfortable. We had the best nights sleep ready for our journey onto Crater Lake the next morning! Never judge a book by its cover guys.
Just as we were leaving Portland we were strongly advised to do two more things….. see Mount Hood and Crater Lake and we are more than glad we did! Crater lake was and is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever laid eyes on.
If you’ve ever read or watched ‘Wild’ By Cheryl Strayed, this is were she ended her trail at the Bridge of The Gods and she stopped for the worlds biggest ice cream here and so did we! Absolutely delicious.
We saw so many breathtaking waterfalls on our journey through Oregon including Multnomah Falls, Wahkeena falls and Fairy falls. We Unexpectly came across Multnomah Falls when we got out of the car for a stretch. The stretch quickly turned into a 3 hour hike! We met kind people on the way, one couple gave us a map and took a great pictrure of us with Columbia river gorge in the background and another lady gave us a spare bottle so we could drink the fresh water from the running rivers. The image above is not Multnomah falls as I can’t find the ones we took. There are many more beautiful falls that we have yet to see, it’s on my bucket list to see all the falls in Oregon!
Into The Woods
And onto the Redwoods! I can’t express with words how huge these beauties are so I’ll show you….
The Big Sur
It was everything and more! Like what I’d dreamed of seeing since watching Charmed as a little girl. We hadn’t planned on staying the night but we loved it so much we thought why not, plus we needed to wash after days of sleeping in the car
Goodbye for now America
The photos were taken with an iPhone 5 so they aren’t the best quality but I do hope you liked them, next time we go back we will take even better ones!
